The bannerfin shiner is a member of the minnow, shiner and chub family. This species has a small black blotch at the tip of the first ray and at the middle of the second ray of the dorsal fin. Bannerfin shiners have diamond-shaped scales along upper side of the body, slightly subterminal mouths and a greatly enlarged dorsal fin. This shiner can be found in sandy runs of medium to large rivers
