The Florida sand darter is a member of the perch and darter family. It has a slender and elongate body that is glass-clear and often with a yellow-green tint on the back and side. There are two black bands on each of the widely separated dorsal fins, and this species has a protruding snout and terminal mouth. Florida sand darters can be found in sandy runs of creeks and small to medium rivers.
