The longjaw minnow is part of the minnow, shiner and chub family. This species has large silver-white chambers on its cheek and the underside of its head is flattened. Longjaw minnows have subterminal mouths and their eyes are upward-facing. A dark streak along the back and the scales are darkly outlines. Longjaw minnows can be found in shallow, sandy riffles and runs of creeks and small to medium rivers.
