Description

Candidates will gain valuable experience working alongside keepers with a variety of exotic and endangered animal species including Zebra, Antelope and Giraffe. Along with daily husbandry, responsibilities will include helping with diet preparation, record-keeping, monitoring animal behavior, assisting with enclosure maintenance and assisting and conducting daily tours. Interns will have the opportunity to observe veterinary procedures as they relate to general animal care.

Daily husbandry duties include:

  • Cleans and maintains enclosures; removes animal excrement and food remnants
  • Prepares food for animals; regulates and distributes food once prepared; loads and unloads foodstuffs
  • Assists or conducts twice daily tours
  • Observes behavior of animals on both a day-to-day and long-term basis; notes any unusual behavior, signs of illness or injury, change in appetite, start of breeding cycle, or lack of compatibility with group members and reports information
  • Assist/observe veterinary procedures when required
  • Establishes and maintains computer files and records relating to animals to include animal medical records, behavior records, breeding records, animal keeper and veterinarian notes and reports; enters required data in the animal record keeping software system Zoological Institution Management System (ZIMS)

Eligibility

  • Experience with large hoof stock in zoological environment preferred but not required.
  • Strong work ethic, interest in animal care, husbandry and conservation.
  • Capable of accurately following written and verbal directions, policies and protocols.
  • Ability to work alone as well as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in physically demanding and adverse conditions
