The University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute’s Scientist in Every Florida School program is pleased to announce the second annual summer professional development workshop titled “Nature of Science.” The workshop will take place July 6-10, 2020 at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.
During the workshop, teachers will work in scientific laboratories across the UF campus and assist scientists with ongoing research projects while developing lesson plans based on what they’ve learned. Participating scientists will also be expected to complete at least one classroom visit during the upcoming school year.
It’s a win-win, says TESI director Bruce MacFadden.
“Teachers will not only be able to actually do the science and build connections with the scientists, they will be able to develop practical and relatable lesson plans that fit into their curriculum and meet state learning standards,” MacFadden said.
Space in the program is limited to 30 teachers. The cost to participate in the workshop is free, and teachers will receive a $500 stipend upon successful completion.

UF Scientists:
We are currently seeking scientists and labs to serve as science mentors during the workshop. Interested UF scientists, lab members and graduate students will be expected to give teachers authentic experiences in the lab. Throughout the week, scientists will co-design lesson plans and outreach activities to be used in the classroom next school year. The time commitment for each mentor is approximately 12-15 hours for the week. Each participating lab will have their outreach supplies and all travel accommodations to complete the visits purchased by SEFS. Lunch will be provided throughout the week.
