Answer questions. Win prizes. Have fun.
These were the objectives of students and staff participating in the Thompson Earth Systems Institute’s Environmental Leaders Network Trivia Night.
For the first social event for the Network this year, a variety of majors and backgrounds, including but not limited to Marine Sciences, Environmental Management, and Environmental Engineering, were brought together to duke it out.
It was a fierce battle between six different teams as they answered environmental and sustainability questions. Questions covered a broad range of topics, ranged from easy to difficult, and were organized into the categories of air, water, land, and life.
Put yourself to the test: would you have answered these questions correctly? Scroll to the bottom for the correct answers!
- Air. What weather phenomenon, which occurs cyclically every 2-7 years, typically brings wetter and cooler conditions to Florida?
- Water. Which Florida ecosystem is known as the River of Grass?
- Land. What term is used to describe Florida’s landscape, which is composed of limestone bedrock that is prone to forming sinkholes, caves, and springs?
- Life. What bird is the state bird of Florida?
It was a back-and-forth competition as teams excelled in some categories and displayed weaknesses in others. However, there was one well-rounded team who pushed ahead of their competitors and came out on top: The Pesto Penguins.
Sarah Marc, a staff member at the UF Water Institute who graduated last year in Environmental Science, Zaed Christie, a student studying Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Science, and Dylan Besse, a student in the Warrington College of Business, made this team whole. Despite being the only team made up of members who did not know each other beforehand, their teamwork and shared knowledge allowed them to solidify their first-place win.
While not every participant of the EL Network Trivia Night was able to leave with a prize in hand, a good experience was shared among them all.
The TESI Team thanks everyone who came out and encourages students who wish to learn more about more future events and opportunities to join the Environmental Leaders Network!
