Type of position

Paid internship. Compensation: $15 per hour and maximum hours worked of 375 hours over the internship duration. Additionally, up to $1,500 will be provided to cover travel costs for the intern to attend a professional conference, meeting, or development opportunity.

Position description

The Gulf of Mexico Alliance intends to fund two paid internship opportunities within the Mississippi State University Coastal and Marine Extension Program for an undergraduate student or recent graduate (within 6 months) from groups currently underrepresented in environmental sciences, marine sciences, engineering, environmental education, sustainability science, or similar disciplines.

The mission of the MSU Coastal and Marine Extension Program (CMEP) is to help the coastal environment and communities by putting science into practice. These activities include applied research, extension, and outreach work across a variety of disciplines. Programs within CMEP that the intern will gain experience with include the Program for Local Adaptation of Climate Effects (PLACE), Marine Fisheries Ecology (MFE), Coastal Conservation and Restoration (CCR), and MS Sound Estuary Program (MSEP).

The intern will work across all of these programs on activities including, but not limited to:

  • Field- and lab-based research (fisheries, coastal ecology, living shorelines, marine debris, coastal uplands, etc.).
  • Conducting outreach presentations
  • Developing and implementing outreach and education products
  • Co-organizing meetings
  • Developing publications
  • Stakeholder engagement

Working Conditions:

  • Internship work-week schedule will be mutually determined by Mississippi State University staff and intern but will be tailored to fit current class schedule if still enrolled. Depending on the availability of the intern on a given week, hourly expectations are 10-30 hours per week.
  • May be required to work at times other than 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and could include work on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, as necessary.
  • Will be required to perform work outdoors, occasionally in adverse weather conditions

Internships are supported by the Gulf of Mexico Alliance (GOMA): GOMA, a non-profit organization, is a partnership of the five Gulf States that supports a broad network of federal agencies, academic organizations, businesses, and other non-profits in the Gulf Coast region. The mission of GOMA is to enhance the environmental and economic health of the Gulf of Mexico through increased regional collaboration.

Qualifications

  • Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or a recent graduate within the last 6 months.
  • Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0-grade point scale or “Pass” on a Pass/Fail system.
