It can be an invaluable experience for students to interact with scientists regularly and that is what the Scientists in Every Florida School initiative is trying to achieve. On Tuesday, August 6th, Bruce MacFadden (Thompson Earth Systems Intstitute Director), Brian Abramowitz (K-12 Education and Outreach Coordinator) and Jeanette Pirlo (PhD candidate/ Scientist) and Michael Ziegler (MS Candidate/Scientists) presented the program to all of the middle & high school teachers in Escambia County. By the end of the day, the SEFS team had received interest in a scientist visit from almost every secondary school in the district. Impressively, Escambia High School had every single one of their science teachers request a scientist visit.
Currently, the first Escambia County scientist visit is scheduled for October 15th. Two UF scientists will be presenting to one hundred and twenty students from two grade levels.
