The University of Florida Thompson Earth Systems Institute’s education and awareness campaign, The Insect Effect: Insect Decline and the Future of Our Planet aims to inform Floridians of all ages about the importance of insects. To further this goal, TESI’s Scientist in Every Florida School program has curated insect-related activities and K-12 resources, including lessons and videos:
- Resources for K-12 Teachers: Mounts Botanical Garden of Palm Beach County and our Scientist in Every Florida School team has compiled a list of lessons and videos related to insects and rooted in Florida Sunshine State Standards. - Insect Influencer videos and sliders: Although many Floridians may associate the word insect with those pesky mosquitoes, our state is home to so many beneficial bugs! Watch our short and shareable insect videos and download our Instagram slider series to meet some of Florida’s Insect Influencers and find out why they’re so important.
- Virtual field trip with Mounts Botanical Garden: In case you missed it, this September SEFS teamed up with Mounts Botanical Garden for a virtual field trip, you can view the YouTube video of the event at this link.
- Miami Blue coloring book: This coloring book, produced by the Daniels Lab at the Florida Museum of Natural History, tells the story of the Miami Blue, a critically endangered butterfly found only in the Florida Keys. - Wings Over Florida: The Florida Museum and the Florida Wildlife Commission developed this free bird and butterfly listing recognition program that rewards people for their Florida life list and big year list achievements.
