Montbrook Fossil Dig

The Florida Museum of Natural History is seeking volunteers to help dig at the Montbrook dig site in Levy County for the month of November. The Montbrook Site is very productive and almost all volunteers will find some fossil specimens on their first day. The most commonly found fossils are bones from the shell of freshwater turtles and vertebrae, spines, scales, and skull bones of fish, including gar, catfish, snook, and drum.

MONTICELLO: Lake Miccosukee Sinkhole Hike

Join us for a walk on the actual bottom of Lake Miccosukee where two new sinkholes have become exposed due to the current drought. These swallets formed only recently (2010) and are usually covered with water. This rare event is a sight to see and illustrates how our local lakes and the Floridan Aquifer are related. It is a beautiful short walk (about 100 yards) through majestic bald cypress trees to a Florida waterfall!
