Montbrook Fossil Dig

The Florida Museum of Natural History is seeking volunteers to help dig at the Montbrook dig site in Levy County for the month of November. The Montbrook Site is very productive and almost all volunteers will find some fossil specimens on their first day. The most commonly found fossils are bones from the shell of freshwater turtles and vertebrae, spines, scales, and skull bones of fish, including gar, catfish, snook, and drum.

FORT MYERS: Volunteer Meeting and Lecture Series

Our November meeting features Amy Bennett Williams, author of Along the Caloosahatchee River. Amy, a journalist for The NewsPress, tells the Caloosahatchee’s story of the ancient animals that once roamed its shores, the 19th-century entrepreneurs who bent it to their wills, and the celebrities who have relaxed on its waters. Richly illustrated with historical images and observations, the book chronicles the life of the waterway that joins the heart of Southwest Florida to the Gulf of Mexico and beyond.
