Of Florida’s nearly 21.7 million residents, around 4.7 million — or 22%— speak Spanish at home.
To help reach this audience with Earth systems content, TESI is partnering with Florida Museum of Natural History interns to translate select Know Your Florida social media posts into Spanish. These interns are University of Florida students pursuing studies in Spanish, and they are mentored in the translation process by Florida Museum youth outreach coordinator Alberto Lopez Torres. The internship is focused on translating museum educational materials and exhibits into Spanish, but the students were excited to also translate some of TESI’s social media outreach as part of their intern duties.
“This takes us one step forward in making the museum more accessible to all,” Lopez said.
As of August 2022, 10 bilingual posts have been shared on our Know Your Florida Instagram page, which has a following of more than 3,100 users. Check out some examples of these posts below!
This program was made possible thanks to a collaboration with Antonio Sajid López Méndez and his Spanish Internship Course from the UF Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies.
