Science and Me LogoScience and Me: Using Video to Share Scientist Journeys

Summer B 2020 Workshop

July 6 – August 14, 2020

Underrepresented UF Undergraduate & Graduate Students in the sciences

Are you a UF student that identifies as a minority, LGBTQ+, or other underrepresented group in the sciences? We want to help you share your story.

Through this free, virtual workshop during UF’s Summer B session, we will walk you through the process of developing, filming, and editing a short video about your journey to becoming a scientist.

Your video story can help show public audiences that scientists come from all backgrounds. It can also help inspire other underrepresented students to pursue a science career by helping them realize that science can be for them too.

No equipment? No problem. Most filming can be completing using a smart phone, and additional gear will be loaned to participants via a COVID-safe pick-up process or via express mail to students residing outside of Gainesville.

As a benefit of participation, students who complete the workshop will get to keep a smartphone lens kit and lavalier microphone that they can use to create additional videos on their own, after the program has ended.

Participants will receive individual mentoring as they develop stories that answer questions such as (but not limited to):

Creative ideas are encouraged, such producing the video in a language other than English, or with bilingual components.

The workshop format is designed to be flexible, and will include:

The workshop will culminate in a virtual film festival where the short videos will be premiered for the public. These videos will also be shared via social media and on the program organizers’ websites.

Workshop space is limited to 12 participants. Students who identify as a minority, LGBTQ+, or other underrepresented group in the sciences are especially encouraged to apply.
