SUMMARY:Teacher Training: Florida’s Early Native People
DESCRIPTION:Teacher trainings support educators in deepening their science content knowledge\, conducting inquiry classroom activities and planning successful school group visits. Teachers interact with scientists and learn how to connect exhibit content to classroom curriculum. \nThis training is for Alachua County Public Schools fourth-grade teachers only. \nFlorida’s Early Native People\nThanks to the generosity of the Florida Museum Associates along with the support of the school district\, Alachua County Public Schools fourth-grade teachers will step back in time to learn about the first people to live in Florida. They will excavate a replica archaeological site filled with food remains\, pottery\, trade items as well as tools made of shell\, bone and wood to compare life today with life in the past. With Museum guides\, teachers will journey through the exhibits to examine ancient artifacts and see how natural resources have supported Florida people for thousands of years. \nIn preparation for the 2019-2020 field trips\, fourth-grade teachers in this training will:\n\nLearn about Florida archaeology and early native people from Museum scientists.\nExplore the Northwest Florida: Waterways & Wildlife\, South Florida People & Environments and Crocs: Ancient Predators in a Modern World exhibits.\nPreview activities that can be used before and after field trips.\nReceive resources to use in the classroom.\nBecome familiar with the logistics for making a successful Museum field trip.\nEarn in-service points.\n\nActivities and resources are aligned with the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and teachers earn in-service points upon completion. \nRegister via email to Carly Mikell at mikellcr@gm.sbac.edu by Sept. 13.
