In April 2020, our Daniels Lab team and First Magnitude released its 9th beer celebrating an imperiled Florida butterfly, this time the Florida Leafwing.

Though the event itself was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions, First Magnitude used its “drive-through brewery” to celebrate the release of this session red IPA called “Rocklands Red.”

The Daniels Lab at the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity and First Magnitude have been creating these special beers to raise awareness for endangered and at-risk butterflies in Florida. The proceeds from these beers benefit butterfly conservation and research in Florida.

Florida Leafwing butterflies get their distinctive name because of the leaf-like appearance on the underside of their wings. In flight, however, they reveal the brilliant orange coloration of their wings above, making them easy to spot. Today the Everglades National Park is the only place in the world where the Florida Leafwing can be found.
