Parakysis longirostris Ng & Lim 1995
Identification: P. longirostris has a conical head with small, subcutaneous eyes. The upper lip has a median lobe projecting into a median concavity on the lower lip. There are 1-2 branches on the outer mandibular barbel. The inner mandibular barbel has 2-3 short, thick branches; the first 2 are almost always separated at the base. The mandibular latero-sensory canal has a pore lateral to the inner and outer mandibular barbels. Body tubercles are small. The dorsal fin has 1 spine and 4 rays; the last 3 rays are sometimes branched. The pectoral fin has 1 spine and 6-7 rays; the innermost 2 rays are sometimes branched, the median rays are branched, and the last ray is simple. The pelvic fin has 5-7 rays; the first 2 are sometimes branched, the 3-4 median rays are branched, and the last ray is simple. The anal fin has 8-10 rays; the first 6 rays are simple; the 2-4 posterior rays are branched. The caudal fin has 11-12 rays; the uppermost and lowermost principal rays are simple, and the 8-10 median rays are branched. The caudal fin has rounded lobes lacking secondary branching. There are 31-32 total vertebrae, 19-20 preanal vertebrae, and 12-13 postanal vertebrae. Maximum size = 46 mm SL.
Range: P. longirostris is found in Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore, and the Riau Archipelago.
Habitat: P. longirostris is found in dense vegetation in flowing streams.
Similar species: P. longirostris can be distinguished from other members of the genus by the broad, conical head and rounded caudal fin lobes. Other species have narrower or broadly rounded heads, and pointed caudal fin lobes. P. anomalopteryx lacks a lobe on the upper lip and corresponding median concavity on the lower lip. P. grandis has secondary branching of the caudal fin rays in specimens larger than 30 mm SL. P. verrucosa and P. anomalopteryx have long, slender branches on the inner mandibular barbel that are joined at the base.
