The University of Florida Herbarium maintains a non-circulating reference library of publications pertinent to the naming and classification of vascular plants (plant taxonomy and nomenclature).
The literature in this collection contains descriptions, geographical ranges and keys for differentiating species of vascular plants, as well as information regarding latin plant names (nomenclature), plant collectors and economic botany.
The herbarium library holdings include books, journals, reprints, microfiche, maps, card files and botanical illustrations. The searchable online catalog includes only a portion of our book, reprint and journal holdings. In-house file card catalogs and staff are available to assist in locating other holdings. Our staff are also retroactively entering books and journals into the UF Libraries catalog. Herbarium entries are clearly denoted in UF’s catalog. The advanced search option with “herbarium” as location will limit searches to herbarium library entries.
Search the Herbarium Library HoldingsOne of the best ways to participate in the programs at the University of Florida Herbarium is through tax deductible gifts to our library. A comprehensive library is crucial to the functioning of an active herbarium. Library materials are utilized not only by herbarium staff and students, but also by a wide variety of patrons from many universities, agencies and the general public and spanning an array of disciplines.
Plant classification and nomenclature is intensively based on historical literature (ca. 300 years). Floras from many regions and specialized monographs are often required to accomplish plant identifications. Economic, useful and toxic plant publications, weed and invasive plant guides are essential for staff botanists to answer questions asked by the public and other researchers.
The volume of literature published greatly exceeds our financial capabilities. Publications listed in our catalog with the call number “[wish list]” or “[wish list2]” are items we have identified as important references that we currently do not have funds to purchase. Donations of these publications or funds to purchase them are welcome and tax deductible. Your gift will be acknowledged by letter. The item donated will also bear an acknowledgment. The call number system used in the University of Florida Herbarium Library is modified from the Library of Congress Classification system. This modified system is designed by: Kent D. Perkins, University of Florida Herbarium (FLAS), Florida Museum of Natural History, 379 Dickinson Hall, 1659 Museum Rd., PO Box 117800, Gainesville, FL 32611-7800
Library of Congress Classification
A description of the Library of Congress Classification system is available via the Library of Congress Web site. PDF files with text details are now provided. Most of the UF Herbarium Library subject matter falls within Q, Science and S, Agriculture.

Geographic Numeric Code Chart: (Special Note)
The numeric codes QK108 – QK474 may be used as a standard guide for dividing a LC class into geographic regions (except for QK495), if the LC class code does not specifically divide it up. Items should be filed to smallest available region which encompasses the area in the list. The numbers should be added to the decimal portion of the number code in the call number. If the call number has a decimal number already, it should be added to the end of the decimal number. If the LC code already subdivides the regions in a general way, redundant codes may be omitted and those codes which are appropriate can be appended to the correct division for a finer division. These codes should be used in preference to the country/region cutter codes.

8 – 280 Families, by family #
The books are organized in three sequences within a family:
1) Publications concerning the family in general are classed by author. The first decimal cutter line represents the author (or title or series). (E.g., QZ 19 .Author; QZ 19 .G735 1987, Grass Systematics and Evolution (“G” on the cutter line comes from the title since this is an edited volume))
2) Publications concerning the family as a whole in a geographic area are classed with the three digit decimal geographic code added to the family number in the range. The decimal numbers range from #.108 to #.474. The next line takes the first letter of the author (or title or serial) and one cutter number (unless more are needed). (E.g., QZ 19.154 .Author; QZ 19.154 .H3 1978, The Grasses of Florida by D. W. Hall)
3) Publications concerning only a particular genus in a family use the family number plus decimal .5 added (#.5). The first decimal cutter line consists of the first four letters of the genus; the second cutter line represents the author. (E.g., QZ 19.5 .LEER .P97 1967, Taxonomic and Distributional Studies in Leersia (Gramineae) by Grant Lloyd Pyrah.
