Quality control for specimen data, image acquisition and data handling is essential for the success of this project.
Barcoding
Images are named based on the barcode on the specimen and specimens data are linked via the barcode number, which is the same as our catalog number. If a specimen is incorrectly barcoded the image will be incorrectly named and the barcode will not be available for the correct specimen.
Please check and double check that you have put the correct barcode on a specimen. The best way to double check is to have someone else reverse the stack of specimens you barcoded and check them.
Imaging
Many things can go wrong to degrade to quality of the images. If you are not aware of problems, hundreds of images may need to be discarded.
- When you set up, check that all the software and camera settings are correct and the camera is correctly positioned.
- Make sure the correct lights are turned on.
- Examine the initial images and periodically examine new images. Make sure the color and brightness look correct and the image is focused. The color charts should be on the top of the image and the rulers should be at the bottom.
Don’t proceed unless you are absolutely sure everything is set up correctly.
ALWAYS – ask questions, if you have any doubts.
