Volunteer, Glenn Hart, caught a picture of the huge dust devil that fell into our fossil pit today! The weather conditions have been perfect for these whirlwinds and we finally experienced one. It was powerful enough that it lifted a 10- by 20-foot tarp off of the ground and took off with some of our rope and one of our orange flags.
Fun Fact:
There are a ton of synonyms for dust devil, including, whirlwind, sandstorm, duster, sandy, sand column, sand spout, peesash, samiel, black blizzard, khamsin, shaitan, simoom, sirocco, dust storm, windstorm, cyclone, wind tornado, harmattan, dust whirl, whirly, and in Australia, a ‘willy-willy”.
