The Florida Museum is hiring a full-time Biological Scientist to assist Doug and Pam Soltis with research projects and data management, including interfacing with Research Computing and managing laboratory computing resources. Much of the effort will be focused on conducting and supporting diverse types of data analyses including genome assembly and annotation, large phylogenetic analyses, and spatial phylogenetics (phylogenetic diversity, phylogenetic endemism).

The successful candidate will also help train postdocs, graduate students, undergraduates, and visiting scientists in methods of analysis as well as assist other graduate students using the Molecular Systematics Lab. The successful candidate will also interface with the Scientific Laboratory Manager of the Molecular Systematics Lab and with PIs of multiple research groups, have strong organizational skills, show careful attention to detail, and work well with others.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Highly organized with strong attention to detail, including maintaining sterile, clean, and safe laboratories. More than two years of experience coordinating diverse research activities in a molecular laboratory. Experience with mentoring and/or overseeing students and staff. Familiarity with DNA extraction, library preparation, cloning, cross-species Target Gene Capture, and/or Nextgen Sequencing. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in genomics and genome assembly and annotation and with experience in conducting analyses using High-Performance Computing. Must be able to work closely with a large and diverse group of people, including PIs, staff, students, and vendors.
