GAINESVILLE, Fla. — University of Florida students, faculty and staff have until Jan. 5, 2019, to enter the eighth Elegance of Science art competition.
Organized by the Marston Science Library and Florida Museum of Natural History, the contest is open to UF students and employees who create images or videos as part of their research, as well as those who incorporate scientific tools or concepts in their artwork.
“A gallery of all the art works submitted to the contest showcases the diversity of research on campus through stunning images and concepts,” said Andrei Sourakov, collections coordinator at the Florida Museum McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity and one of the event organizers. “It really underscores what a creative, diverse and exciting place UF is as far as its research.”
This is the second year that participants, in addition to submitting high-resolution images, may also enter original videos up to 3 minutes long via YouTube. Each participant may submit a maximum of five entries, accompanied by no more than a 150-word description written for a non-scientific audience on its artistic, scientific and educational value.
Entries are scored by a panel of judges based on how well they highlight the connection between artistic and scientific perceptions of reality.
Prizes include $150 for first place, $100 for second place, $50 for third place and honorable mentions.
An awards reception and short presentations by contestants will take place in April 2019.
