Consisting of more than 480,000 specimens, the University of Florida Herbarium (FLAS) is within the top 100 herbarium collections in the world and one of the larger herbaria in the southeastern United States. Established in the late 1800s, it is the oldest and most diverse collection of its kind in Florida with collections from around the world with a focus on the southeastern United States and circum-Caribbean region. The collection is used by educators, the public, and researchers in the U.S., as well as throughout the world.

The Mammalogy department studies the evolutionary history of mammals. This is primarily done by examining their DNA, which carries a written record of their past. They also study the parasites of mammals, which in many cases have evolved in tandem with their mammalian hosts for millions of years.
